I’m very lucky to be interviewing Cynthia Vaughn-Stevens, my cousin and friend. She is an Evangelist and Spoken-Word Artist. She is also the author of the book titled “Life, The Mosaic Word.” Her book and many of my other favorite books are listed on my Must Read Page. I thought it would be fun and different to interview her in the traditional question/answer format. I hope you enjoy!
Hi Cindy, Thanks for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
I was born into an extremely large family (me being the middle child) and raised in NY. From a young age (13 to be exact) I became a focused & driven young Christian who loved the Lord and His people. As a kid I wanted to be many things from a ballerina dancer to a doctor, a female rapper to a lawyer lol. I loved almost every profession so it was extremely hard to narrow down to one. However, one desire stuck with me…the dream of writing. I’ve always been passionate about poetry and when I first encountered Dr. Maya Angelo’s work; I knew I wanted to embark on that journey.
Where do the your ideas come from?
My creativity comes from within, if I’m relaxed the words just flow like water from a faucet but if I try to force it out; I’ll get writer’s block.
What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?
It took a while for me to birth my first book “Life, The Mosaic Word” because I got caught up in ‘other things’ but one day I made up my mind and told myself if I don’t focus on my dream it will never come to pass. So I buckled down and made it happen.
How did you publish this book and why?
I self-published my 1st book and had a very close and dear friend edit it for me. The pros of self-publishing is that it is very quick, easy and inexpensive; the cons is trying to market your product. Social media is a free way of getting it out to the massive but it had some challenges too.
Did you get interviewed by local press/radio for your book launch?
Last year, I was interviewed on a blog talk radio station based in LA and invited to give live readings at various events which was exciting.
What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is “A Walk To Remember” by Nicolas Sparks
What is your favorite motivational phrase?
My favorite motivational phase is simple “Just Do It” you will come up against opposition, delays etc but if you want to succeed YOU can’t just talk about your aspirations, dreams and goals YOU got to get off your butt and like the Nike slogan says “JUST DO IT” God will give you the strength you need to succeed!!! I wish I gave my younger self this advice when I was younger but nevertheless I have arrived and I will continue full speed ahead.
Where can we buy your book?
If you love to read and be uplifted at the same time, go to the website listed above to order
Life, The Mosaic Word
Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.
